ELA Blog #1- "Trends" or "Banned Books"

Blogging in ELA class will always involve some research. You can think of the websites you visit as "sources." When you are writing to the topic, be sure to cite your sources. This will give you some practice in essay writing!
For your first blog, you will have a choice of 2 topics:

Choice #1: something that is current- "trends." I would like you to read some articles or news posts on the internet about things that are currently trending for 2014. In your blog, discuss the following:
-a minimum of 2 trends discussed
-trend origin (how it came about)
-what message does the trend convey?
- is this trend in your style? Why/Why not?
-what type of person is the trend geared for?
-your take on if the trend will stick around for a while...or not...
-any other ideas that stem from this topic that you think will make your blog more interesting

Choice #2: "Banned Books" week. For this blog, you will research some of the books listed as banned books. Your blog should include:
-background information on "banned books" week
-what are some of the titles you find interesting to be on the list of banned books? Why?
-choose 2 books to discuss....research the basic synopsis of the book
-what justification was given to have your books on the banned list?
-do you agree/disagree! Why/why not?

Remember, you are blogging for ELA class. Your purpose is to write formally and show your teacher that you understand basic English grammar skills! Please use multiple paragraph format and indent.

This blog is due on Tuesday, September 30th and it must be at least 352 words in length......because we gotta represent the Citrus Co....

Happy Blogging,
Mrs. Martin :)

BLOG DIRECTIONS: Persuasive Techniques

The past couple weeks have been filled with information on persuasion and marketing. For your blog, I would like you to search the internet for 3 advertisements that use different persuasive techniques. You need to be able to explain the following for each of these ads:

1. What type of persuasion is being used
2. How the persuasion is used in the ad
3. Why it is effective (or not) for that ad

Your blog must:
+contain at least 1 print ad (could be from a newspaper, magazine, website....anything NOT a video)
+contain at least 1 video commercial
+be at least 300 words in length
+contain an introduction (why you are writing your blog)
+each of the commercials/ads gets its own paragraph.
+End with a concluding paragraph containing your feelings on ads/commercials/marketing/ if you might enjoy a career in a field revolving around persuasion!

BLOG POST DIRECTIONS: 1-24-14, Figurative Language and Music!!!

As you saw in our last quiz, figurative language is what makes up the lyrics to many songs! This week, your task will require some skill set, creativity and some of your favorite music!

Your blog will be 5 paragraphs:

1. Introduction defining figurative language and why authors like to use it (RESEARCH THIS)
2. Song #1, the artist, and 1 piece of poetic element/figurative language used in the lyrics. Tell how it is that element and how it makes the song better than being "literal."
3. Song #2, the artist, and 1 different piece of poetic element/figurative language used in the lyrics. Tell how it is that element and how it makes the song better than being "literal."
4. Song #3, the artist, and 1 different piece of poetic element/figurative language used in the lyrics. Tell how it is that element and how it makes the song better than being "literal."
5. A conclusion paragraph that overall states WHY music is poetry....just set to song. :)

RULES:
The songs you choose MUST be school appropriate-
1. NO RACIAL words
2. NO PROFANITY
3. NO INFERED PROMISCUOS VERBAGE

Basically, if you have to ask me IF you can use it, it is probably not appropriate. If it is one little "not-so-horrible-but-still-not-good" word, then CHANGE IT!

****WORD COUNT MUST BE AT LEAST 400 words minimum!****
